First launch on macOS: open it, and if it's blocked click Open Anyway in System Settings, Privacy & Security. If macOS says it's damaged, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/VAND.app once, then open it. It opens normally every time after.

  1. Download VAND, open the DMG, and drag VAND into Applications.
  2. Open VAND from Applications.
  3. If macOS says it can't be opened, go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway.
  4. If it still won't open or says it is damaged, open Terminal and run: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/VAND.app, then open VAND. It opens normally every time after.

On first launch macOS may say it can't verify VAND, because it's unsigned. Click Open Anyway in System Settings, Privacy & Security. If it ever says the app is damaged, run this once in Terminal, then open it — it opens normally every time after:

  2. Open the installer.
  3. Click More info.
  4. Click Run anyway.

SmartScreen flags any installer that isn't signed with a paid EV certificate. The More info → Run anyway path is a one-time prompt.

Some newer Windows 11 PCs also run Smart App Control, which is stricter than SmartScreen and can block unsigned apps outright — with no “run anyway”. If VAND won't open at all, that's why. Turning it off is permanent, so we don't suggest it; it's the honest trade-off of shipping unsigned while VAND is free.

Why the warning

VAND ships unsigned, on purpose, for now.

Apple charges $99/yr for a Developer ID and Windows EV certificates run $200 to $400/yr. While VAND is free, those costs don't make sense yet. The first-launch step is the whole trade-off: approve it once in Privacy & Security, or strip the quarantine flag, then it behaves exactly like a signed app. Either way your data never leaves your device.
