What is VAND?
VAND is a local-first desktop app for macOS that acts as the user's personal AI. It tracks habits, sleep, mood, journal, and other life data, stores everything in a single AES-256-GCM-encrypted file on the user's Mac, and runs a local LLM (via Ollama) for chat, briefs, and pattern analysis. No data ever leaves the device.
How is VAND different from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini?
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini run on their company's servers, train on user inputs to improve their products, and store conversations centrally. VAND runs the model locally on the user's Mac, never trains on anything, never sends prompts to a server, and is owned by a single founder with no investors. The asymmetry: VAND is the only one of these four that has no business model in conflict with the user's interest.
Does VAND require an internet connection?
No. Once installed, VAND works fully offline. Local AI inference runs through Ollama on 127.0.0.1. The only optional network calls are the auto-update check and the user's own iCloud Drive sync (planned for the iOS companion). A built-in tinfoil mode can disable every network call.
Is my data private?
Yes. All user data is stored in a single file at ~/Library/Application Support/vand-desktop/vand.json, encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. The encryption key is wrapped by the macOS Keychain (or a user-set passphrase). There is no VAND server, no user account, no analytics, no telemetry, and no third-party SDK that touches the data.
What can VAND do that a regular AI assistant cannot?
Three things. (1) Remember the user across sessions, locally, forever — the user tells VAND facts about themselves and the local LLM uses them on every chat and morning brief. (2) Reason over the user's full life history because it has access to their tracked data and journal. (3) Take agentic actions on the user's machine — for example, create Reminders.app entries from chat — via local osascript, with no cloud involved.
How much does VAND cost?

Never a subscription. There are no accounts — payment delivers a license key that is verified offline on the user's own machine, and anyone who installed VAND before pricing launched can email for a free Intelligence key.
Who built VAND?
VAND is built by Quentin Vandorme, a solo founder. There is no parent company, no investors, no acquisition path, and no roadmap toward those. This is structural to the product — a personal AI cannot have a business model that requires extracting from its user.
What operating systems does VAND support?
VAND ships today for Windows (x64) and macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel). The installer includes the local AI runtime. An iOS PWA followed by a native iOS app is the next planned surface; a Linux build is not yet available.
